ABOUT PRIME OPTICALS
OUR HISTORY
Prime Opticals & Eye Clinic was founded in 1989 by Dr (Mrs) Valentina Ideh a Moorfields trained ophthalmologist and fellow of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons. The clinic was born out of a vision to improve eye care services in Nigeria. The Clinic commenced operations with just one doctor, a nurse, a youth corper and a cleaner. It began operations at her husbands practice Tona hospital located at Ikpoba hill Benin City. On the 8th of December 1989 only one year later, it moved to 41 Airport road Benin City where it diligently provided excellent eye care for 24 years.
Over the years, Dr Ideh has had a great impact on the eye care service in Edo state; in fact, she purchased the first Optical Tomography Machine in Edo state. Her contributions have been recognised locally and internationally. She has been honoured severally by the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria, and was named this year the MWAN Heroine of 2020. In 2016 she was called by the University of Benin to give a lecture at the swearing in ceremony of the newly qualified doctors. In 2019, she delivered the 2Oth faculty of Opthalmology Lecture of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria; a great honour for any ophthalmologist in Nigeria.

In 2014 to celebrate 25 years of service, Prime Opticals moved to its the state of the art three storey building located at 70 Ihama Road Benin City. Today Prime opticals boasts 8 doctors, advanced medical equipment, a fully equipped ultra modern theatre and a modern patient record database.

During its 30 years of service Prime Opticals has given back to the community by holding its semi-annual eye camp which targets the less privileged. Over 25 Eye Camps have been held where free consultation is offered in addition to discounted frames and surgeries. Free surgeries have also been offered to selected patients. In 2016 the Prime Opticals eye camp project was shortlisted for the APM awards in the United Kingdom.
On the 2nd October 2014, Prime Opticals launched its television programme; Prime Eye Half hour which is aired on ITV station in Edo, Delta and neighbouring states. The programme addresses key diseases that affect the eyes.
